President Neil Wilson opened the first meeting of the new “season” at Wetherby Speakers Club last Thursday. The meeting was chaired by Chris Clissitt who introduced John Holian’s excellent tutorial about how to write a speech. Peter Nellist then delivered an 8 minute impromptu speech based on Napoleon’s quotation “I base all my calculations on the expectation that luck will be against me”. The speeches were rounded off by Jocelyn Brooks’ fascinating short history of Istanbul.
The speeches were evaluated by Chris Hurford and Neil Wilson who gave constructive comments on each Speakers’ performance. Neil Wilson then set speakers the challenging task of speaking off the cuff for two minutes on a variety of quotations revolving around the theme of writing. Peter Wilson’s role as General Evaluator was to give his views on the evening as a whole.
