Competitions

We take part in competitions, which are usually good fun, often entertaining and entered into in a friendly spirit.

Competitions are held for Speeches, Evaluations and Topics at various levels:

Our own Club competitions open to club members only

Area Competitions, where the winners of our own competitions represent Wetherby against the winners from the other two clubs in the Vale of York Area (Leeds and York R.I.)

District Competitions, where the winners at Area level compete against other areas in the Eastern District (Yorkshire Dales and North East England)

National Competitions where the winners from each of the 8 Districts battle to become the National Champion.

At Wetherby we also hold an annual After Dinner Speech Contest, usually in March at the Bridge Inn, Walshford. This is usually on a theme, and is always light hearted, entertaining and hugely enjoyable.

We also hold occasional debates within the club and may take part in friendly competitions at other clubs, such as balloon debates

Experienced members may also be asked to judge competitions held at other clubs or at Area or District. Judging can be both a demanding and rewarding experience, requiring adjudicators to use their evaluative skills quickly and competently.
