Saturday, November 19th, 2011

The club President, Howard Herbert opened the meeting and introduced Scott Stephenson who chaired the remainder of the meeting.

New member Ann Wickert delivered an excellent maiden speech and entertained the audience by explaining the humorous effects of her habit of procrastination on her life.

John Holian followed and his task was to demonstrate the ability to “Mean What You Say”. John compared the pros and cons of British Rail the way it was back in the days when the late Sir Jimmy Saville fronted their advertising campaign, with the current complex set up. Ultimately John thought it better to change it back to the way it was.

Mavis Cryer and Howard Herbert evaluated the speeches respectively and their comments and developmental points were both helpful and constructive.

Tim Hunter presented an entertaining Topics Session when members were asked to give a 3 minute, unprepared talk based on humorously modified book titles, such as “The 38 Steps” and “Moderate Expectations”.

Peter Ryans evaluated the topics session and the General Evaluator was Niki Boersma who gave her helpful comments on the meeting as a whole.

After opening the meeting the President, Howard Herbert introduced Jeff Denton, the Chairman for the evening.

Jocelyn Brooks gave the first speech with the very topical title Gunpowder, Treason and Plot. As expected, it was about a local man, Guy Fawkes and as the assignment involved the use of visual aids, the story of the gunpowder plot was illustrated using PowerPoint.

Colin Remmer then asked everyone How do You Feel? Speaking without notes he explained how to create positive attitudes and use imagination to gain confidence. This was related specifically to speaking in public. Colin’s assignment was to demonstrate the use of gestures in speaking.

Although Sophie Dickinson had taken part in Topic sessions this was her first speech to the club. It was entitled I Dream of Genie and gave an account of her new business selling jeans through a party system. It was an excellent start as a speaker and everyone wished Sophie well.

The speech evaluators Caroline Boom, Howard Herbert and Mavis Cryer were all very experienced speakers themselves.

Peter Wilson organised the Topics session and the theme was Irritating Phrases and Words. As expected, the result was a series of highly entertaining two minute speeches from club members.

Two long-standing members Neil Wilson and Chris Clissitt gave an evaluation of the topics session and the meeting as a whole, respectively. Jeff Denton then handed the chair back to Howard Herbert who closed the meeting
