Wetherby News club meeting report 21 October 2010

President Neil Wilson opened the latest meeting of Wetherby Speakers Club. The meeting was chaired by Howard Herbert who introduced two speeches. Peter Wilson gave an educational speech about various ways of using notes when speaking. Scott Stephenson then gave a fascinating speech about the parallel lives of two giants of the music industry who were both born in the same year 70 years ago – Cliff Richard and John Lennon.

The speeches were evaluated by Chris Clissitt and Peter Nellist who gave constructive and helpful comments on each Speaker’s performance. Jeff Denton then set speakers the challenging task of speaking off the cuff for two minutes on the theme of famous books and their authors. John Holian evaluated the topics session and Neil Wilson gave his views on the evening as a whole in his role as General Evaluator.

Vice President Terry Ryan opened the latest meeting of Wetherby Speakers Club. The meeting was chaired by Peter Nellist who introduced three speeches of a very high standard. Jeff Denton gave an educational speech about the use of gestures to enhance a speaker’s performance. Caroline Boom entertained the audience with a humorous speech about a series of near catastrophes on her wedding day. Tim Hunter then gave readings from three books written by himself.

The speeches were evaluated by Mavis Cryer, Terry Ryan and Jan Millar, all of whom gave constructive and helpful comments on each Speaker’s performance. Peter Wilson then set speakers the challenging task of speaking off the cuff for two minutes on a variety of subjects taken from popular phrases in current use. Jocelyn Brooks evaluated the topics session and Chris Clissitt gave his views on the evening as a whole in his role as General Evaluator.

33rd Charter Anniversary Dinner

The annual Charter Anniversary Dinner has been brought forward to November this year. It takes place at The Bridge Inn, Walshford on Friday 19th November at 7.30 for 8pm.

16 members and guests attended the second meeting of the season which was opened by President Neil Wilson. The meeting was chaired by Peter Wilson who introduced three excellent speeches. Anthony Meadows gave an informative speech about the various uses of “Purposeful Plants”, and Chris Clissitt entertained the audience with a speech about men’s neckties. John Holian then gave his second excellent tutorial speech about how to approach off the cuff short speeches.  

The speeches were evaluated by Howard Herbert, Neil Wilson and Jeff Denton, all of whom gave constructive and helpful comments on each Speaker’s performance. Terry Ryan then set speakers the challenging task of speaking impromptu for two minutes on a variety of subjects which had arisen from various conversations he had in the previous few days. Peter Nellist evaluated the topics session and Mavis Cryer gave her views on the evening as a whole in her role as General Evaluator.
